Prescription Drug Abuse on the Rise

Prescription drug rehabs are more in demand than ever and according to the Salt Lake Tribune this week, Utah ranks among the worst offenders in “the dark realm of prescription drug abuse.”
In a study released by the Utah Department of Health, highlighted factors in 432 drug overdose deaths including financial problems, a history of previous substance abuse and mental health concerns.
Recommendations given by Kurt Manwaring who has worked with the drug court program in Salt Lake County and has published two academic journal articles on issues related to substance abuse:
1. Public awareness of the dangers of prescription drug abuse.
2. Public support for those who need help with addiction.
3. There must be a proper understanding of the origins of addiction.
The 2009 Monitoring the Future survey indicates a continuing high rate of non-medical use of prescription drugs and cough syrup among teens. Seven of the top 10 drugs abused by 12th graders in the year prior to the survey were prescribed or, purchased over the counter.
Nearly 1 in 10 high school seniors reported past year non-medical use of Vicodin, and 1 in 20 reported abusing Oxycontin, also a powerful opioid painkiller. Non-medical use of these painkillers has increased among 10th graders in the past five years.
Prescription abuse is a serious problem affecting all sectors of our society and it appears to be getting worse.
